Detailed review of your case by the BFA

After your personal interview, the authorities check your case in detail. This step is called the detailed review.

During this step, all information and evidence are carefully examined before a decision is made.

What happens in this step?

Each case is checked individually. This means the authorities look at your personal situation and your reasons for asking for protection.

During this step, the BFA will:

  • check the information you gave in your interview,
  • see if your story is clear and consistent,
  • look at your documents and other evidence,
  • consider the situation in your country of origin (see the latest publications of the Country of Origin Information Unit of the BFA here), and
  • check if you meet the legal conditions for protection.

The authorities will then decide if you can receive:

  • refugee status, or
  • subsidiary protection status, or
  • another form of protection, or
  • if your application will be rejected.

This decision is based on European and Austrian law.

In most cases, you do not need to do anything during this step. However, the authorities may contact you if they need more information or documents

Medical examination

The authorities may ask you to undergo a medical examination concerning signs of past persecution or serious harm. The examination is free of charge and you will be asked to give your consent to it.

You will be informed about the results of the examination, which will be taken into account in the assessment of your application.

If no examination is requested by the authorities, you may request the examination at your own expense.

What happens next?

After your case has been reviewed, the authorities will make a decision.

This is the next step, where you will be informed about the outcome of your application.
