Notification of the decision
In this step, you receive the decision on your asylum application.
This means you will find out if you receive protection or if your application is rejected.
What happens in this step?
A written decision will generally be sent by post to you or to your legal adviser, if you have one. You will be informed about the outcome of the decision in a language that you understand.
The decision can be positive, which means that you receive:
- refugee status, or
- subsidiary protection status, or
- another form of protection.
The decision can also be negative, which means that:
- your application will be rejected.
If the decision is negative, the reasons will be explained in the decision and you will be issued a decision to return to your country.
If you do not agree with the decision, you can appeal it. This means that a court will review the decision. You can find out more about the appeal here.
What happens next?
After you receive the decision, the next steps depend on the outcome:
- If the decision is positive, you can stay in Austria and receive protection and rights.
- If the decision is negative, you have to return to your country.
You will also find information about how to appeal the decision in the next phase.
